Absolutely, Russian cars might not be the most amazing vehicles in the world; but the country has a long history of building cars. Yet, when you think of some of the cars arising from the Soviet era, you absolutely have that image in your mind of a classical large car that looked extremely similar to other models.
However, we collected for you some stories of the top epic Soviet car models to have a look at and travel a bit through history.
1. The GAZ-69 Car
The Gaz-69 Four wheel light truck was the most popular off-road car in the Soviet Union. The Car was produced by The Gorky Automobile Factory from 1953 to 1956, and then by The Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant from 1956 to 1972.
The good performance and the excellent Off-road advantages made of the Gaz-69 truck, a good vehicle that was chosen as a standard military truck by the entire Eastern Bloc of the Soviet Union.
2. The Gaz-13 Chaika
The Gaz Chaika “Seagull” was the most luxurious car ever made in the Soviet Union; it was a large classy car that looks mostly the same as a limousine.
The Chaikas model was affordable only to the Soviet government officials and not to simple citizens; the only chance for common people to ride the Chaika was during weddings since it was possible for citizens to rent the car for their marriage celebrations.
The car was manufactured from 1959 to 1981.
3. The ZAZ Zaporozhets
Not all cars during the Soviet Union were big and classy, many car factories tended to produce mini cars like the ZAZ Zaporozhets in order to make it affordable for common people.
The ZAZ Zaporozhets was produced by The Zaporozhian Automobile Factory from 1958 to 1994 and was designed as a super mini car with an air-cooled rear engine, and with only 23 horsepower engine, and later on with 30 horsepower engines.
4. The Volga Gaz-24
The Volga Gaz-24 was a very popular car among men, women, and even children; it was the real symbol of wealth and luxury of all Soviet citizens.
But many wealthy people didn’t have the chance to buy the Volga since it was sent directly to the government and taxi companies after its production. The most popular models of The Volga were Wagons and Sedans.
5. The Moskvich-412
The Moskvitch-412 was the most famous car in Russia and other European countries. It was produced from 1967 to 1997 with 72horse power engine and four cylinders.
Many Cars of the Moskvitch-412 model were produced in Belgium and Bulgaria because of its popularity overseas and its great performance during the international car racing championships when the Soviet car had defeated many Austin Martin vehicles.
6. The Vaz-2121 Niva
The Vaz-2121 Niva was produced as a direct request from a Soviet Minister who wanted a comfortable four-wheel drive off-road car.
The Vaz-2121 Niva was the most comfortable car ever produced in the Volga Automobile Plant, with great ability to drive through the toughest road conditions. The car was famous overseas and it was sold all over the world, it was the first Soviet car that entered to the Japanese car market.
7. The Vaz-2101
The Vaz-2101 is a small car that was produced in 1970 by The Volzhsky Avtomobilny Zavod’s (VAZ). The popular nickname of the vehicle was Kopeyka, and it was the top common traveler car used in the Soviet Union.
The Kopeyka was exported by many countries abroad the Soviet Union, and till today, many Vaz-2101 cars are still used in the streets of Cuba. In 2000, the Kopeyka won the contest of the best Russian car of the 20th Century which was organized by the Russian automobile magazine Za Rulem.
