Coca-cola is much more than a simple soft beverage. Created over a hundred years ago, this soda drink produced by The Coca-Cola Company has become one of the most famous products in the world. This success is mainly due to the marketing efforts (and its sweet taste, of course) carried out throughout the 20th century by its founder Asa Griggs Candler – the businessman who bought the recipe from John Stith Pemberton and grew The Coca-Cola Company into one of the most valuable brands ever.
On average, about 1.9 billion drinks made by this company are consumed every day. As you know, there are other things to do with Coca-Cola besides drinking it. Some of you probably already have used it as a cleaning hack to unclog drains or remove rust from an old wrench. But there are many, many more unusual uses for this soda. Here are some of them!
1. Toilet Bowl Cleaner
One day you will lift the toilet lid and realize that your toilet bowl is covered in yellow and disgusting stains. On that day, you will decide to stop pushing back the deep cleaning it desperately needs and get to work. You will probably also realize that you don’t have any specialized products to clean that surface.
When that day comes, try looking in the fridge. Using coke to clean the toilet bowl is as simple as it gets. Just pour coke around the rim over the stains and let it sit for at least 90 minutes. Then use the toilet brush to scrub the entire surface and flush the toilet. The high amounts of phosphoric acid in the coke will break down the stains and make your toilet bowl look as good and shiny as new.
2. Clean Clothes
Coke can be used to clean stained clothes and fabric. It is super effective in removing milk stains, blood spots, and grease stains while simultaneously getting rid of unpleasant smells. Due to its dark color, you shouldn’t use it on light fabrics! Pour coke directly over the stains and let it sit for roughly five minutes before putting it into the washing machine.
3. Clean Eyeglasses
Using Coca-Cola to clean glasses is not the most convenient method, but it might come in handy when your eyeglasses become covered in grease, and you have run out of cleaning spray. Just pour coke over the eyeglasses, wait a couple of minutes so that the beverage can break down the grease and then rinse clean with water.
4. Relieve The Pain Induced By Jellyfish Stings
Jellyfish stings occur more frequently than you might think. Although only a small part of the cases are severe enough to require medical treatment (and only a fraction of those are life-threatening), the pain induced in mild cases can be quite unbearable. If you are treating your jellyfish sting at home, pouring coke over the wound will alleviate the stinging pain.
5. Cooking With Coca-Cola
The household uses for coke are not limited to the cleaning department. There are a lot of recipes that can be improved by using this beverage as a secret ingredient. You can use it in BBQ sauce, to tenderize beef, or as a sweetener in any dish.
6. Clean Your Car’s Windshield
When you drive your car through a highway in the summer, your windshield gets to the end of the trip full of dead mosquitoes and bugs stuck to its surface. And it is not always easy to remove them during washing unless you use coke!
Soak a cloth in coke and use it to scrub the windshield. The acidity of the coke will make the mosquitoes detach from the windshield so you can easily clean them off. Be careful during this cleaning process because coke can damage the car’s paint job!
7. Clean Burnt Pans
Life hacks that can help us clean burnt pans can never be too much. If you use just soap and water, it will be a nightmare to get rid of that burnt crust at the bottom of your pan. Fortunately, coke can help you.
Pour a tiny bit of coke into the pan – just enough to cover its base – and simmer. After that, wash it regularly. You will be fascinated at how easily all the dirt will come off.
8. Use Coke In The Garden
Coke can be used in the garden in two different ways. The first one is to kill slugs and other insects that may eat the plants in your garden. Put a low bowl filled with coke in the garden and let it stay there overnight. The sugar in the coke will attract the slugs that will end up drowning in the acidic drink.
You can also use coke to boost the composting process in plants that can handle its acidity (such as Azaleas, Bergenia, Foxglove, and Astilbe, for example). Pour a tiny bit of coke into the garden soil around these plants to reduce the soil pH and attract the microorganisms needed to jump-start the breaking down process.
9. Remove Gum From Hair
Although it is highly unlikely, some of us will be unlucky enough to get gum caught in our hair. When that moment comes, you don’t have to take extreme measures and cut the piece of hair around the gum. You can use coke. Pour coke directly into the portion of hair with the bubble gum and let it soak for a couple of minutes. After that, the gum will come off easily.
10. Clean Oil Stains From Your Garage Floor
The oil that drips from a car can tarnish your driveway or leave stubborn stains on your garage floor – and you won’t be able to clean it with just water and detergent. Pour an abundant amount of room-temperature coke over the oil stain and let it sit overnight. In the day after, wash the area with warm water and detergent before rinsing it off with plain water.
