House cleaning is just one of those really annoying and tiring but neccessary activities. Besides being forced to do a bunch of tasks you don’t like, you usually also have to do it over the weekend when you were supposed to be relaxing after a long week’s work. Nobody deserves that.
To try to get through this process as quickly as possible, people tend to create a very clear and precise cleaning routine. When you know exactly what to clean and how to clean it, everything becomes simpler, faster, and less stressful.
But this could end up leading up to some problems. If you forget to include the cleaning of a few household items in your routine, they will most likely be collecting grime and dust for a very long time without you noticing it.
After a year or two, you open up your little bathroom trash can to dispose of a couple of cotton swabs and you realize that you can’t remember the last time you have deep cleaned that piece of plastic.
How gross! That’s why you should always have a list of those items that, while not required to be included in your weekly cleaning routine, need to be cleaned at least every now and then.
These are 8 of the things that you forget to clean up in your house:
1. Remote control
As you know, your hands are filled with germs and bacteria. They block off your cough and sneezes, touch every type of surface in public places, and shake other people’s hands.
And when you finally get home at the end of the day, it is with those same hands (well, at least one of them) that you grab the remote control. Then, germs and dead skin cells are passed to the remote’s surface.
You can easily clean your remote control with a microfiber cloth that is soaked in alcohol. Do it every once in a while to disinfect the remote properly.
2. Computer keyboard
Following the same line of thought, you can easily understand why it is important to keep your computer keyboard clean. In this case, besides the germs transmitted through your hands, there is also the aggravating factor that many people have the habit of eating in front of their computers. Right on top of the keyboard.
Deep cleaning a keyboard can be very tricky and take some time. First, turn it upside down over a trash can and start tipping its base. You will notice all kinds of dirt, crumbs, and debris falling down. Yep, it is that dirty.
Then, you can clean it with a microfiber cloth. If you want to make it look new, remove all the keycaps and wash them with water and soap; and take advantage of the fact that the keycaps are not in the way to properly clean the base of the keyboard.
3. Toothbrush holder
The number of people who forget to clean their toothbrush holder is rather odd. For all intents and purposes, it is an object that we notice more than once every day. And if so, why do we ignore it when cleaning the bathroom?
The main problem is that this little item becomes gross pretty quickly – according to the National Sanitation Foundation, they are the third-dirtiest item in your home (kitchen sponges and sinks are the other two, in case you are wondering). The bacteria hidden in your toothbrush will invade the holder and spread, so make sure you pick a toothbrush holder that can be easily washed.
4. Light switches
Even though you only touch the surface of your light switches for less than one second, it is enough to spread the germs on your hands. So, next time you are cleaning the house make sure you disinfect them. It is really quick.
When was the last time you cleaned your mattress? We knew you wouldn’t remember. The mattress seems to always be so well protected with a mattress cover, sheets, and quilts. But it will still get dirty. That’s why it is recommended to clean it at least once every six months.
How to clean a mattress: vacuum it on all sides to remove all kinds of dirt (hair, crumbs, dirt, etc.) and sprinkle bicarbonate of soda all over it.
Wait a few hours and vacuum it again. You can also put it outdoors under direct sunlight. Oh, and since we’re on the subject: don’t forget to wash your pillows!
6. Air conditioner
If you often forget to clean and perform regular maintenance on your air conditioner units, you should really set an alarm on your calendar to remind you of this task. Otherwise, it can cause you a lot of headaches in the future and make you spend a large amount of money on repairs.
Cleaning the room air conditioner is fairly simple: unplug it, remove the rear exhaust panel and vacuum the fins and coils; then remove the front grille so that you can access the filter; remove the filter and clean it. However, cleaning the outdoor unit of a central air conditioner may involve some research if you have never done it.
7. Refrigerator coils
People seem to always forget to clean the back of their fridges. When coils become dirty and dusty, your fridge will have to work extra harder to do its job – keeping the interior at an ideal temperature. This means that it will consume more power and that it will also wear out much faster. And please, try to remember to clean under the fridge as well!
We all know how dirty this appliance can get. Especially if you use it every day to reheat food leftovers.
But most people don’t notice it until it becomes pretty obvious how soiled the microwave is – or maybe they pretend not to notice to avoid the hassle of cleaning a microwave for a couple more weeks. If you are one of those people, you can stop pretending because the cleaning process can be really simple.
Add two tablespoons of baking soda or lemon juice to a bowl with water and put it in the microwave for roughly four minutes on high. Wait a couple of minutes before opening it up and remove the bowl to clean the interior with a cloth.
